Below is a list this of this week’s FCTL activities. If you’re starting to plan your fall courses and need ideas about incorporating new technologies, experimenting with assessment strategies, or conducting research on student learning outcomes, please contact our office for support. The FCTL staff is available to you all summer long to discuss all of these subjects and more. Remember that many of our workshops can be modified to incorporate videoconferencing, allowing you to participate from your home or office (or exotic locale!). Just be sure to give us a few hours to plan for that if you’re interested.

Strategies for Teaching: The Basics and Beyond

Join us for a discussion of best practices in teaching on topics such as syllabus design, lecturing effectively, classroom management / student interactions, lesson planning, creating and grading assignments, interactive techniques, and teaching with technology. This event will be especially valuable for faculty members who are relatively new to the classroom and would like some foundational information.

Fall 2012 Adjunct Retreat

We hold training sessions for adjunct faculty once per semester, covering both nuts-and-bolts (rosters, legal matters, syllabi) and more general pedagogy (how to hold effective and interesting lectures, increase student engagement, and build courses that are balanced and aligned between goals, objectives, assignments, and teaching practice). The retreat is either a three hour (nuts-and-bolts) or seven hour event (including more in-depth pedagogical topics) with an hour set aside for lunch on your own.

FACULTY WRITING CLUB SUMMER 2012
Join a faculty writing club to make the most of your summer. Having trouble getting into a good writing rhythm? Need to get away from your office to get a change of perspective and a little privacy? Forget the coffee shop--join your colleagues on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in FCTL for a loosely structured writing session. We'll take five or six minutes each week to go around the room and state a goal for the time block and then spend the rest of the time working on our individual projects. Bring your own laptop or use an FCTL computer. And of course there will be coffee. Everyone is welcome!
