Workshop: Prezi: A New, Free Alternative to PowerPoint 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Do you have trouble finding the time to work on your writing? Do you have an article that you would like to develop? If so, you are invited to apply for the summer 2012 FCTL Writing Your Journal Article in Twelve Weeks workshop. The purpose of this workshop is to enable faculty to produce an article manuscript for submission to an academic journal. It is designed to help participants to make time for research and writing in the midst of their other various professional and personal obligations. It is also designed to help participants make and meet weekly goals. Faculty writers will work over twelve weeks during the summer C term to revise an existing piece of writing (conference paper, chapter, unpublished draft, etc.), to identify publishing venues, and to submit the finished product for publication. The workshop will begin the first week of C term (May 14–18) and end the last week of the term (July 30­–August 3rd). Participants should be prepared to attend six face-to-face meeting (in weeks 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11), to have occasional online “check ins” with the workshop group, and, most importantly, to talk about their work with colleagues. Each participant will receive a copy of the Writing Your Journal Article in 12 Weeks book prior to the beginning of the workshop and a grant of $300 upon completion. Join us for a hands-on learning experience using the open-source software Omeka. Create complex narratives and share rich collections, adhering to Dublin Core standards using Omeka, designed for scholars, museums, libraries, archives, and enthusiasts. Each year the University of Central Florida Victim Services department produces The Vagina Monologues show to help raise awareness about issues of violence against women. This year’s on campus show is on Saturday, March 31st in the Student Union Cape Florida Ballroom. The pre-show begins at 6pm and the show begins at 7pm The pre-show will feature live music, a presentation about sexual health and wellness by Nikki Mier from Fairvilla, and crafts items for purchase. All proceeds will benefit the UCF Victim Assistance fund and The Victim Service Center of Central Florida, which work tirelessly advocating for women and men who have been victims of crime, violence, or abuse. The Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Program announces the WAC Starter Grant Program. The purpose of the program is to foster the development of effective ways to teach writing in the disciplines, through the design of innovative instructional approaches, assignments, and classroom activities. Grants will be awarded to assist faculty in designing activities, assignments, outcomes, and even courses that will improve the teaching and learning of writing in their departments and programs. Individual faculty members and small faculty teams from all departments and academic units are eligible to apply. Part-time faculty may apply as a part of a team that includes full-time faculty. We particularly encourage applications from faculty members teaching GEP courses, courses that serve as a gateway to a major, online courses, and large lecture courses. A total of $5000 is available for up to ten awards. Awards will typically range from $200 to $500, with the exact amount depending on the scope of the proposed project. Having trouble getting into a good writing rhythm? Need to get away from your office to get a change of perspective and a little privacy? Forget the coffee shop--join your colleagues on Thursday and Friday mornings from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in FCTL for a loosely structured writing session. We'll take five or six minutes each week to go around the room and state a goal for the time block and then spend the rest of the time working on our individual projects. Bring your own laptop or use an FCTL computer. And of course there will be coffee. Everyone is welcome!
