CENTER FOR SUCCESS OF WOMEN FACULTY UPCOMING EVENTS The CSFW has a number of opportunities coming up this fall, including: CSWF & FCTL Book Club: (Open to all Faculty) “Lean In” by Sheryl Sandberg, Thursday, September 26, 2013, Noon to 1:00pm, FCTL Conference Room. In Lean In, Sandberg examines why women’s progress in achieving leadership roles has stalled, explains the root causes, and offers compelling, commonsense solutions that can empower women to achieve their full potential. Sandberg digs deeper into these issues, combining personal anecdotes, hard data, and compelling research to cut through the layers of ambiguity and bias surrounding the lives and choices of working women. She recounts her own decisions, mistakes, and daily struggles to make the right choices for herself, her career, and her family. She provides practical advice on negotiation techniques, mentorship, and building a satisfying career, urging women to set boundaries and to abandon the myth of “having it all.” She describes specific steps women can take to combine professional achievement with personal fulfillment and demonstrates how men can benefit by supporting women in the workplace and at home. Sandberg is the chief operating officer of Facebook and is ranked on Fortune’s list of the 50 Most Powerful Women in Business and as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World. Women’s Self Defense Class: (UCF Women Faculty Only) Tuesday, September 10, 2013 UCF Police Station 1:30 – 3:30 'S.A.F.E.'(an acronym for Self-defense Awareness & Familiarization Exchange) The UCF Center for Success of Women Faculty is pleased to offer UCF women faculty a Women's Self Defense Class. The instructors will be UCF Police Officers who have been trained by the National Self-Defense Institute (http://www.nsdi.org) This course is designed to provide attendees with information, tactics, and options which may be useful for various types of crimes perpetrated against women. The UCF Center for Success of Women Faculty will cover the cost of this training. Twenty (20) seats are available, and are first come, first served. Red Cross Adult CPR Class: (UCF Women Faculty Only) Tuesday, September 24, 2013 Student Union Sand Key Room 220, 8:30 to 1:00 The Center for Success of Women Faculty is pleased to announce a FREE Red Cross Adult CPR class for UCF Faculty. The Red Cross certification now is good for two years, and the certificates are printed on an 8.5" X 11" sheet of paper There are 20 seats available, and will be filled first come, first served. VOLUNTEER UCF SEEKS FACULTY ADVISORS FOR ALTERNATIVE BREAK PROGRAM Volunteer UCF is looking for engaged faculty members to serve as advisors for the Alternative Break Program. The Alternative Break Faculty Advisor plays a crucial role in helping students increase their awareness of the social topics that emerge throughout the trip in a safe and effective manner. VETERANS ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER CONFERENCE OCTOBER 4

SIXTH ANNUAL FLORIDA STATEWIDE SYMPOSIUM: ENGAGEMENT IN UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
This event has been scheduled for October 11-12, 2013 here at UCF. Presentation submission and registration are open now through September 13, 2013 for faculty, administrators and staff. Dr. Patricia Pukkila, Professor of Biology Emerita from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and founding director of UNC’s Office of Undergraduate Research, will be the keynote speaker this year. 2013 FLORIDA BOOK AWARDS COMPETITION NOW OPEN; DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS DEC. 2, 2013
Established in 2006 and now the most comprehensive state book awards program in the nation, the contest recognizes and celebrates the year’s best books penned by full-time residents of the Sunshine State, with the exception of submissions to the Florida Nonfiction and Visual Arts categories, whose authors may live elsewhere. The contest categories include General Fiction, Young Adult Literature, Children’s Literature, Florida Nonfiction, Poetry, Popular Fiction, Visual Arts, Spanish Language, and the recently added category for General Nonfiction. Entries, which can be submitted by anyone (e.g. publisher, author or literary agent), must have both an original copyright date between Jan. 1, 2013, and Dec. 31, 2013, and an International Standard Book Number (ISBN). Applicants are encouraged to submit their books into competition any time after the competition is launched, and as soon as possible after books are officially published. All entries must be received no later than 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, 2013 (this is not a postmark deadline). FACULTY WRITING CLUB FALL 2013
Join a faculty writing club to start your semester off with a focus on productivity and camaraderie. Having trouble getting into a good writing rhythm? Need to get away from your office to get a change of perspective and a little privacy? Forget the coffee shop--join your colleagues on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in FCTL for a loosely structured writing session. We'll take five or six minutes each week to go around the room and state a goal for the time block and then spend the rest of the time working on our individual projects. Bring your own laptop or use an FCTL computer. And of course there will be coffee. Everyone is welcome!
