SUMMER BOOK CLUB
This fall, UCF is launching a new initiative for incoming first-year students, the Common Reading Program. All first-year students will receive a copy of the same book at orientation and then participate in events throughout the year that relate to the themes of the book. The selection for the 2014 incoming class is Garbology, Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash by Edward Humes. Faculty members who wish to incorporate this year’s selection into their fall courses are invited to participate in a summer book club at the Faculty Center. The first 10 respondents will receive a free copy of the book. The meetings will be held on four Wednesdays from 1:00 to 2:30 in CB1-207. The dates are May 28, June 11, June 25, and July 9. Please reply as soon as possible.

UPDATE FROM THE LIBRARY: NEW RESOURCES

  • The UCF Libraries now has access to Nature Communications, a highly requested multidisciplinary journal that publishes high-quality research from all areas of the natural sciences. Papers published by Nature Communications represent important advances of significance to specialists within each field.
  • The UCF Libraries is also now providing access to Gale Artemis, a path-breaking research experience that unites Gale’s digital archives and reference collections. By building a seamless research environment for multiple collections, Gale is creating the largest digital humanities and social sciences collection in the world. On the Artemis platform, users can engage with primary sources through subject indexing, term frequency and term clusters.
  • Lastly, the UCF Libraries is happy to be a founding member of JSTOR. In order to maintain complete JSTOR holding the UCF Libraries has added Business IV and Arts & Sciences XII to the existing array of titles already in the JSTOR collection. The Business IV Collection builds on the strong economics and business foundation of the Business I, II, and III Collections. Arts & Sciences XII expands coverage of the social sciences, and comprises disciplines with high usage and broad appeal.

FACULTY WRITING CLUB SUMMER 2014
Join a faculty writing club to focus on productivity and camaraderie. Having trouble getting into a good writing rhythm? Need to get away from your office to get a change of perspective and a little privacy? Forget the coffee shop--join your colleagues on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in FCTL for a loosely structured writing session. We'll take five or six minutes each week to go around the room and state a goal for the time block and then spend the rest of the time working on our individual projects. Bring your own laptop or use an FCTL computer. And of course there will be coffee. Everyone is welcome!
