WORKSHOP DETAILS: PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING
This workshop is based on three books: 1) How Learning Works: Seven Research-based Principles for Smart Teaching by Susan Ambrose, et al. 2) Teaching at Its Best: A Research-Based Resource for College Instructors by Linda Nilson, and 3) Why Don’t Students Like School? A Cognitive Scientist Answers Questions About How the Mind Works and What It Means for the Classroom by Daniel Willingham. Participants will learn about several learning principles and how to apply them to teaching. The principles address students’ prior learning and motivation, course organization and climate, mastery learning, providing feedback, and encouraging self-directed learning. The workshop will be offered June 2 from 11 a.m. to noon, June 8 from 1 to 2 p.m., June 12 from 10 to 11 a.m. and June 24 from 1 to 2 p.m.

Teaching and Learning Day 2015
You’re invited to attend this year’s Teaching and Learning Day, which will occur on Thursday, June 11, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (Classroom Building 1, Room 207). The Faculty Center is excited to offer a variety of sessions that will help you to think about ways to increase student engagement in your classes. We will begin with a keynote presentation by Brooke Hessler of Oklahoma City University, who will discuss “Story-Worthy Learning Experiences: Using Digital Storytelling to Foster Scholarly Engagement.” The morning session will also include roundtable activities. Following lunch, we will host a “Click Off” that will allow you to compare a variety of classroom response devices (see full description below).

Please note: Lunch will be provided for the first thirty-five participants who register and attend both the morning and afternoon sessions.
In response to increased interest in classroom response systems, the afternoon session of Teaching and Learning Day will host six popular clicker companies as they demonstrate their products in a situation that replicates classroom-like conditions. This two-hour session will consist of an introduction, demonstration from all companies, and information regarding implementation. Representatives from all companies will remain on-site after the demonstrations to answer questions and meet with interested faculty. The focus for this event is on Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) clickers, where students would use a phone, tablet, or laptop as their clicker, but there will also be physical options available. Follow up programming will be offered to assist in implementation.
Keynote Speaker Bio:
Dr. H. Brooke Hessler is Professor and Eleanor Lou Carrithers Chair of Writing and Composition at Oklahoma City University, where she teaches courses in interdisciplinary research and writing, visual rhetoric, and new media textuality, and is a multi-year recipient of the student-elected Distinguished Honors Professor award. A Fellow of the DaVinci Institute, Dr. Hessler specializes in arts-integrated, community-engaged, experiential teaching and learning. In 2002 she founded the Virtual Archives Project, a partnership with the Oklahoma City National Memorial through which college students conduct oral history interviews, handle artifacts, and help develop interactive museum exhibits. An active member of the international digital storytelling community, Dr. Hessler has worked with students and faculty throughout North America, as well as in Europe and Singapore. Closer to home, she serves as a co-facilitator in the Weather Recovery Project, a digital storytelling program for survivors of tornadoes and other natural disasters in the Great Plains. She co-edited A Guide to Composition Pedagogies (Oxford UP, 2013).

This year, at the Diversity Breakfast, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion will be reinstating our longstanding practice of presenting awards to organizations and individuals who have shown commitment and dedication to advancing the university's fourth strategic goal of "becoming more inclusive and diverse." Applications for the three Diversity & Inclusion Impact Awards may be downloaded from our website at www.diversity.ucf.edu. The deadline to submit an application is 12:00 Noon on Friday, August 14, 2015. The awards will be presented at the Diversity Breakfast on October 12, 2015.
Diversity Week Student Poster Contest
This year, our Knights are once again invited to participate in the Diversity Week Student Poster Contest and to share their creative sides with the UCF and Central Florida communities.
