The deadline to sign up for the fall Faculty Development Cohorts described below is this Thursday, so let us know if you have any questions about that. Also, this fall the Faculty Center will host a monthly brown bag session about an education-related TED Talk. We will watch a short video and then discuss it together. The first session will feature Sugata Mitra's lecture, "Build a School in the Cloud" and will take place on Friday, September 18, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.in the Faculty Center. Feel free to suggest our next selection.

DIGITAL STORYTELLING INTEREST GROUP
The Faculty Center’s digital storytelling interest group meet this week, featuring guest speaker Natalie Underberg-Goode, who will discuss her digital storytelling work and provide an overview of some digital storytelling approaches, examples, and resources that might prove helpful for your own work.

FALL FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COHORTS
The Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning offers opportunities for faculty to examine important and new topics in teaching and learning with Faculty Development Cohorts (FDCs).
Faculty participate in multiple workshops, which include a series of hands-on experiences designed to help innovate or refine teaching techniques and learning activities. Participants may receive support from representatives of the Faculty Center, Office of Institutional Research, Research Initiative for Teaching Effectiveness (RITE), Research and Commercialization, Office of Instructional Resources, Center for Distributed Learning, Libraries, and other relevant units and individual faculty members. After completing the workshops, participants often produce a final project for inclusion in the Faculty Center Web site.

SUICIDE PREVENTION WEEK AND QPR-A-THON: MESSAGE FROM COUNSELING AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES
September 7-13, 2015 is National Suicide Prevention Week. The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Federation for Mental Health, is hosting World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th, 2015. This year’s theme is “Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives,” and will focus on raising awareness that suicide is a major preventable cause of premature death on a global level.
Here at UCF, we will be hosting our annual “Field of Memories: Be Aware Show You Care” Flag Exhibit on Memory Mall, September 10th from 9:00-3:00. The exhibit is a powerful and poignant visual display representing the 1100 suicides that occur on U. S. college campuses each year. We will be asking students, faculty and staff, as they walk by to write a message of hope to someone who may be struggling with depression or to remember someone lost to suicide. The goal is to fill the field with over a 1000 yellow flags. We are asking for volunteers to help collect the flags to display or to just come out to Memory Mall to support the event by writing your own message of hope to display in the field.
We will also be advertising our QPR a Thon – Suicide Prevention Training, which will be held the following week on Sept, 16th in the Student Union rm 316AB. QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer), guided by certified trainers, is a program designed for everyone to learn what can be done to prevent suicide. The training session is a one hour presentation where you will learn the signs of suicide and three basic principles of how to help save a life. QPR is designed for students, faculty and staff and anyone at UCF. The trainings begin at 9:00am with a new session starting on the top of each hour. The last training offered will at 2:00 pm.

She will focus on her personal journey and struggle, and ultimately, how she found peace with being Christian and LGBT.

FALL FACULTY WRITING CLUB
Join a faculty writing club to focus on productivity and camaraderie. Having trouble getting into a good writing rhythm? Need to get away from your office to get a change of perspective and a little privacy? Forget the coffee shop—join your colleagues on Thursday and Friday mornings from 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. in the Faculty Center for a loosely structured writing session. We'll take five or six minutes each week to go around the room and state a goal for the time block and then spend the rest of the time working on our individual projects. Bring your own laptop or use a Faculty Center computer. And of course there will be coffee. Everyone is welcome!
