Welcome back! This week the Faculty Center staff will join with representatives from entities across campus to welcome nearly 200 new faculty colleagues. Our team will be out of the office most of the day Monday and Tuesday, but feel free to email us if you have questions or need assistance getting ready for the new semester. FALL 2016 FACULTY DEVELOPMENT COHORTS AND COURSE INNOVATION PROJECTS
Active Learning and Metacognition Course Innovation Project
The Faculty Center hopes to recruit 10-15 faculty members to participate in an Active Learning and Metacognition Course Innovation Project. In this cohort, faculty will learn strategies that can be incorporated into any course to improve student metacognition, motivation, and performance. Participants will augment at least one of their courses with metacognitive strategies. Faculty will read Saundra Yancy McGuire’s book Teach Students How to Learn and attend five workshops that incorporate information from the book. SoTL Faculty Development Cohort
The Faculty Center will host a Fall 2016 SoTL workshop series in which participants will research the effectiveness of an active learning strategy that they have implemented in at least one course. Faculty members will meet five times during the semester to learn more about the SoTL process and to share their progress with peers. Participants will receive a copy of the book Engaging in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning by Cathy Bishop-Clark and Beth Dietz-Uhler, which will serve as a primary resource during the program. FACULTY FELLOWS PROGRAM
The Faculty Center hopes to recruit up to three faculty members from across the university and from both the instructor/lecturer and tenure tracks to participate in our faculty fellows program. FALL 2016 BOOK CLUBS
WEBINAR—TRAUMATIC EVENTS ON CAMPUS: READINESS ASSESSMENT, TRAINING, AND RESPONSE
Whether it's a shooting, altercation, or another type of violent incident, an outbreak of meningitis or some other contagious disease, a protest or a celebration that turns into a riot, a train derailment or other transportation accident, a weather-related event or other natural disaster, the potential for traumatic events to occur on the contemporary college campus is ever-present. Please join us for an in-depth look at how colleges and universities can better meet the needs of all those affected when an unfortunate event such as those described above occurs on campus.

STUDENT CONSULTANTS ON TEACHING (SCOT) PROGRAM
Student consultants are UCF undergraduate or graduate students who, when requested, can provide faculty with feedback about their classes in a variety of ways. Consultants are carefully selected and trained to provide descriptive observation and work as a resource to faculty. Student consultants learn from Faculty Center staff members about how to provide objective information on classroom activities through the use of classroom observations and other services. The consultants all have an interest in supporting excellence in teaching and learning, and they receive training in pedagogy, observational techniques, and classroom data. FALL 2016 ACADEMIC INTEGRITY WORKSHOP SERIES
The Office of Integrity and Ethical Development and the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning are providing a series of Academic Integrity related professional development workshops for the fall 2016 semester. This series of workshops will cover everything from setting standards of academic integrity in the classroom, to effectively using Turnitin.com, to how to report academic misconduct, to student perceptions about and myths surrounding academic misconduct. The Office of Integrity and Ethical Development is the educational sanctioning office for all students found in violation of academic misconduct. Though our work over the last four years in the area of academic integrity, we want to improve our relationship and support teaching faculty in their efforts promoting academic integrity at UCF. Faculty, Teaching Assistants, Graduate Teaching Assistants, and others are all welcome to attend. Location for all Workshops: CB1-202 Faculty Multimedia Center.

Enroll Students in Independent Research Credit Hours-Document Your Mentoring
If you are mentoring students on research or creative projects, have them enroll in independent research 4912. Students can enroll for various credit hours, including 0 credit hours (at no cost if enrolled in other courses). When students enroll in this course, it shows up on your course load, and their transcript. For more information on how to do this, talk to your department. In most cases, it is an enrollment form that must be completed prior to the add/drop deadline.
Undergraduate Research: Resources Available and Effective Mentoring Practices
Interested in mentoring undergraduates through research and academic scholarship? Or are you currently working with undergraduates and want to know about the UCF resources? Please join us for this workshop to discuss the programs available for undergraduate researchers and best practices for mentoring them through the experience.
This workshop will be hosted in the Faculty Multimedia Center (Classroom Building 1, room 202) on Tuesday, September 13th, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Monday, September 19th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

WRITING ACROSS THE CURRICULUM GRANT PROGRAM
The Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Program invites applications for the WAC Starter Grant Program. The program is intended as a “gateway into WAC,” so new faculty and faculty who have not yet worked with our program are particularly encouraged to apply. The purpose of the program is to foster improvement of student learning through writing in the disciplines. This goal will be accomplished through the design of innovative instructional approaches, assignments, and classroom activities. Grants will be awarded to assist faculty in designing activities, assignments, outcomes, and even courses that will improve the teaching and learning of writing in their departments and programs. SUICIDE PREVENTION TRAINING
Richard Kadison and Theresa Foy DiGeronimo state in their book, College of the Overwhelmed, that colleges and universities are seeing an increase in the number of enrolled students struggling with serious mental health issues. When it comes to recognizing a student in some form of distress, it is no surprise that university faculty and staff are often on the front line as first observers of a student’s unusual or concerning behavior in the classroom. When this occurs, there is no doubt about the need to get involved, but more often the doubt is about HOW to get involved. The answer: QPR gatekeeper training. QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) is a program designed for everyone to learn what can be done to prevent suicide. The training session is a one-hour presentation where you will learn the signs of suicide and three basic principles of how to help save a life. QPR is designed for students, faculty, staff, and anyone at UCF.
On Wednesday, September 14th the QPR trainers will be offering suicide prevention training during our bi-annual QPR a Thon – Suicide Prevention Training!
**The trainings begin at 9:00am with a new training beginning on the top of each hour. The last training offered will at 2:00 pm.

ALTERNATIVE BREAK PROGRAM ADVISOR INTEREST FORM NOW AVAILABLE
Volunteer UCF is looking for engaged faculty or staff members to serve as advisors for the Alternative Break Program. The Alternative Break Faculty Advisor plays a crucial role in helping students increase their awareness of social and intellectual issues throughout the trip in a safe and effective manner. FACULTY WRITING CLUB FALL 2016
Join a faculty writing club to start your fall off with a focus on productivity and camaraderie. Having trouble getting into a good writing rhythm? Need to get away from your office to get a change of perspective and a little privacy? Forget the coffee shop—join your colleagues on Thursday and Friday mornings from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in FCTL for a loosely structured writing session. We'll take five or six minutes each week to go around the room and state a goal for the time block and then spend the rest of the time working on our individual projects. Bring your own laptop or use an FCTL computer. And of course there will be coffee. Everyone is welcome!
