Welcome back! This week the Faculty Center staff will join with representatives from across campus to welcome around 130 new faculty colleagues. Our team will be out of the office most of the day Monday and Tuesday, but feel free to email us to schedule a time to talk if you have questions or need assistance getting ready for the new semester. New Faculty Learning Community

If you are interested in meeting once a month with fellow new colleagues for a conversation about teaching, research, balancing faculty roles, and anything else you’d like to discuss, please consider applying to be part of a Faculty Learning Community (FLC). Topics to be covered in meetings will be finalized by faculty participants. The community will meet from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. on the following Tuesdays: September 12, October 10, and November 7. Course Innovation Projection: Improving Student Learning Approaches

Faculty members often remark that their students do not study enough or only perform work in exchange for significant extrinsic rewards. The Faculty Center for Teaching & Learning is seeking 15-20 faculty members to participate in a Course Innovation Project that will focus on interventions using metacognition and study strategies to encourage students to study more effectively. The cohort will meet from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on the following Wednesdays: September 13, September 27, October 11, and November 8.

Faculty Development Community: An Asset-Based Approach to Coping with Secondary Trauma

Due to popular demand, the Faculty Center for Teaching & Learning is now offering programming designed specifically for instructors and lecturers! We are seeking 15-20 instructor and lecturer faculty members to participate in a Faculty Development Community that will focus on identifying assets that can be used to cope with secondary trauma that can result from exposure to student trauma. Without proper mapping of resources and tools, it may be difficult for faculty members to know how to assist students and where on campus the resources are that their students need. In addition, if instructors do not have an awareness of the resources that can assist them in dealing with secondary trauma, they place themselves at high risk of compassion fatigue and burnout, which can result in lowered outcomes for their classroom performance. The community will meet from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. on the following Wednesdays: September 6, September 20, October 4, October 18, and November 5.

Presentation Zen Book Club

In his second edition of Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery, Garr Reynolds has included a new chapter focusing on technical and educational topics, in addition to his original approach on creating meaningful presentations. We will use our meetings to discuss Reynolds’s approach in terms of teaching and learning. If you’re looking to improve your presentations, revamp some of your lectures, or learn more about design, please join our discussion. BURNETT HONORS COLLEGE FACULTY FELLOW PROGRAM, HONORS IN THE MAJOR
Applications are now being accepted for the Honors College Faculty Fellow in HIM: https://honors.ucf.edu/opportunity/faculty-fellow-program-with-him/. This new program allows a faculty member to gain professional development and administrative experience while supporting the mission and goals of the Honors College. This year’s fellow will focus on promoting Honors In the Major to faculty and students, strengthening partnerships with college HIM coordinators, and assisting with the administration and assessment of the HIM program.

This peer-reviewed scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) resource is emerging as a go-to destination for faculty/designers in search of ideas for online and blended courses. Please have students that you are mentoring in research and scholarship enroll in Directed Independent Research (XXX 4912), if they are not involved in structured research programs. Students can enroll in various credit hours, including 0 credit hours (at no cost if they are enrolled in other courses). When students enroll in this course, it shows up on your course load, and their transcript.

Straight Talk - What Happens After I Submit my Dossier?
The “Straight Talk” series provides full time faculty seeking promotion at all ranks (assistant professor, associate professor, instructor/lecturer, librarians/instructional designers) a forum for candid and open discussions with university leaders about preparing for and navigating the promotion (and in some cases tenure) process.

2nd Annual “Reach for the Stars” Faculty Fitness Challenge
Being active and spending time with family and friends are both directly linked to career satisfaction. Our primary goal for the 10-week challenge is to encourage faculty to participate in physical activity while spending time with family and friends. First-timers, moderate exercisers, and fitness enthusiasts are all welcome to participate!
The collective goal for UCF faculty is to Reach the Stars! Our specific target is the brightest star in the Pegasus constellation, Enif (Epsilon Pegasi, the nose of the horse), which is 690 light years away. We are taking liberties and translating light years into miles for this challenge. Thus, if one person walks 5 miles a day or 35 miles/week, it will take that one person approximately 20 weeks to reach Enif. Two colleagues could reach the destination in 10 weeks. In reality, UCF has nearly 2,000 faculty, allowing Enif to be reached many dozens of times this fall! Additionally, lets challenge ourselves to beat last year’s group mileage of 20,569 miles. This should be an achievable goal as UCF has many, many stars in our midst!
Registered participants will report mileage each week for 10 weeks via an online survey. Weekly reminders and progress updates will be sent to participants.
Eligibility and Registration

Applications must be submitted no later than 5:00 pm on September 1. The challenge will begin on September 11 and conclude on November 12.

Faculty Excellence Advisory Committee
The goal of the Faculty Excellence Advisory Committee is to provide input, recommendations and feedback on various Faculty Excellence initiatives with the purpose of strengthening UCF faculty and assisting Faculty Excellence in fulfilling its quest. This year, the Advisory Committee will be organized around four subcommittees, each of which will focus on one of the following types of initiatives: Inclusivity, Mid-Career Faculty Support, Work-Life Balance, and General Faculty Excellence. Full‐time faculty members of all ranks and types are invited to apply by Sept. 7.
Scroll and Quill Society
The Scroll and Quill Society recognizes outstanding achievement in research and creative activities. The 2017-18 application period is now open for all UCF faculty members who have maintained continuous full-time faculty appointment at UCF since August 2007. Apply online by Sept. 22.

Faculty Excellence is offering three mentoring communities this fall as an effort to strengthen our faculty:
The Center for Success of Women Faculty Mentoring Community helps foster a proactive and supportive network for women across disciplines and academic ranks. Applications are due electronically no later than 5 p.m. on Aug. 25.
The Non-Tenure Earning Communities provide professional development for faculty members who have been in a non-tenure earning position at UCF for at least three years. Applications are due electronically no later than 5 p.m. on Sept. 1.
The Associate Professor Mentoring Communities are small, peer-directed groups of tenured associate professors designed to engage participants in career planning and advancement. Applications are due electronically no later than 5 p.m. on Sept. 8.
FACULTY WRITING CLUB FALL 2017
Join a faculty writing club to start your fall off with a focus on productivity and camaraderie. Having trouble getting into a good writing rhythm? Need to get away from your office to get a change of perspective and a little privacy? Forget the coffee shop—join your colleagues on Thursday and Friday mornings from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in FCTL for a loosely structured writing session. We'll take five or six minutes each week to go around the room and state a goal for the time block and then spend the rest of the time working on our individual projects. Bring your own laptop or use an FCTL computer. And of course there will be coffee. Everyone is welcome!
