Technology Outside the Box with Teaching Squares
January 24, 2017, 10:00 - 11:00
This workshop will be a collaboration between the Faculty Center and the Office of Instructional Resources to offer faculty an opportunity to become familiar with and prepare a product for their courses using technology resources available at the Faculty Multimedia Center. Specifically, we will be using the One Button Studio to make short videos for your class. The teaching squares framework will be used, which includes peer-observation, self-reflection, and discussion. If you would like to develop a short product during the workshop, please come prepared with an idea for a shirt video for your class and a flash drive to store the product on. The first four participants to attend will have the opportunity to create a product, but all are welcome to join and learn about the technology and pedagogy through peer observation and reflection.
Stories Among Us – Incorporating Digital Stories into Assignments

Digital stories, e-Portfolios, video games, social media tools, blogging, project-based learning, case-based learning: these are only a few examples of integrative learning strategies that have storytelling at their core. Everyone has a story to tell and this is why it is key to classroom engagement. This workshop will focus on how to incorporate digital storytelling into assignments, either as a big or small component. The workshop will also discuss how digital storytelling is a form of storytelling that is a tool for reflection, critical thinking, deep learning, engagement, recall, metacognition, creation, and collaboration.
QEP INTEGRATIVE LEARNING AWARDS CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The Office of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), a unit of the Division of Teaching and Learning, is pleased to announce the 2017 Integrative Learning Awards Program. Last year’s competition was a success: 25 teams, with participants from 31 different units around campus, received more than $150,000 in funding.
In its second year, the program provides funding for projects that address the QEP’s theme, What’s Next: Integrative Learning for Professional and Civic Preparation. There are two award categories:

In celebration of the 115th anniversary of John Steinbeck’s birth, the University of Central Florida and Seminole County Public Library will host a series of events around his classic novel The Grapes of Wrath. Winner of the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature, John Steinbeck (1902-1968) wrote twenty-seven books that explore themes such as fate, poverty, and injustice. Activities, including book clubs, art exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, food drives, theatrical performances, and game jams, will take place February 27-April 14, 2017. The Citizen Curator Project of Central Florida
Sponsored by the Institute for Museum and Library Services, the Citizen Curator Project of Central Florida invites students, artists, activists, educators, and members of the community to use the unique materials found at our local museums, libraries, and archives to curate exhibits on the theme “Eliminationism and Resilience.” A particularly potent example of eliminationism, defined as discourses, actions, and social policies that seek to suppress, exile, or exterminate perceived opponents, is the recent Pulse nightclub attack, whereas the Orlando United campaign may be viewed as an act of resilience. MARCHIOLI COLLECTIVE IMPACT AWARD COMPETITIONS
Two new awards were launched recently to recognize and celebrate the best ideas from across the university to help us reach many of the goals laid out in the Collective Impact Strategic Plan. Both new awards aim to seek out big ideas that will bend our future, with opportunities for faculty and staff to win prizes of $500, $1,000, or $2,500!
The first, the Marchioli Collective Impact Ideation Award Competition, is crowd-sourcing the best NEW ideas from faculty and staff across UCF to help reach the goals in the Collective Impact Strategic Plan. The deadline to apply is Friday, Feb. 3.
The second, the Marchioli Collective Impact Innovation Award, is seeking nominations for faculty and staff whose work is already helping to advance these goals. The nomination deadline is Tuesday, Jan. 31.

With Women’s History Month approaching, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion wants to make sure we honor UCF women who are creating brighter futures, taking a stand, or contributing to a more feminist world. We’re looking to create a series of posters showcasing the accomplishments of women faculty, staff, and/or alumni who have made a difference in the UCF community or in their line of work. 2017 WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH POSTER COMPETITION
The UCF community of faculty, students, and staff are joining together to celebrate women’s history month and to highlight women’s achievements and challenges to gender equity.
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion invites faculty, staff, and student submissions for a poster for campus distribution that raises awareness of the month’s activities. We are looking for a poster that recognizes the diversity of women’s experiences. Poster contributors this year can pick any visuals to convey a national theme (equal pay, women’s rights, women in labor and business) or the International Women’s Day theme #BeBoldForChange.

The MOSAIC program for underrepresented faculty and staff is having a health and wellness/laughter yoga workshop led by Dr. Ann Shillingford-Butler and Coralis Solomon that will be held Feb. 3 at 9 am in the Thompson Training Room of the Barbara Ying Center on campus. FACULTY WRITING CLUB SPRING 2017
Join a faculty writing club to start your spring off with a focus on productivity and camaraderie. Having trouble getting into a good writing rhythm? Need to get away from your office to get a change of perspective and a little privacy? Forget the coffee shop—join your colleagues on Thursday and Friday mornings from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in FCTL for a loosely structured writing session. We'll take five or six minutes each week to go around the room and state a goal for the time block and then spend the rest of the time working on our individual projects. Bring your own laptop or use an FCTL computer. And of course there will be coffee. Everyone is welcome!
