SUNSHINE STATE TEACHING AND LEARNING CONFERENCE 2018
Please find the call for papers for the second annual Sunshine State Teaching and Learning Conference, which will be held in St. Pete Beach, Florida, January 31st through February 2nd, 2018 here. Proposals are due October 31st. The event is co-hosted by the UCF Faculty Center and a similar unit at USF, and will feature a keynote presentation by Michelle D. Miller, author of Minds Online: Teaching Effectively with Technology (Harvard University Press 2014). Thanks for your consideration, and please reach out if you have questions.
VIRTUAL REALITY EVENTS SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 16TH
Recently, the Faculty Center was able to secure funding from the Florida Consortium of Metropolitan Research Universities to purchase two virtual reality kits as well as a one-year subscription to the Embodied Labs modules for the UCF community. This will allow us to engage colleagues in related programming. We will be able to work with you to use the tools with student, staff, and faculty groups. While the basic content of the modules focuses on health-related issues, it also addresses the development of empathy and cultural competencies. It would be a great tool for students to experience before working with members of the community, or before starting a design project that needs to be shaped by end users’ needs. It has relevance for any discipline dealing with education or social issues and concerns and could be of value in courses designed to encourage creativity and innovation among their students. It can also be used with faculty or staff groups.
You are invited to participate in two related events on Thursday, November 16. Carrie Shaw, the EL CEO will be doing a workshop and demo for all interested faculty members from 9:30 to 11 in CB1 205 (the classroom attached to the Faculty Center). The Faculty Center will then host a lunch for interested colleagues from 11:30 to 1. We need RSVPs for both events by Thursday, November 9. You are welcome to attend either or both. Addressing Student Professional Identity Crises

Sometimes students experience a disconnect between their career goals and academic performance, which can lead to professional identity crises and academic decline. In this workshop a panel of experts (including professors, counselors, advisors, and CAPs staff) will discuss a number of student scenarios and offer strategies to help students cope when their professional dreams are in jeopardy.

WANT TO INTEGRATE HIGH IMPACT PRACTICES INTO YOUR CURRICULUM? ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR PEER COACHES THROUGH NOVEMBER 3
Have you thought about integrating high-impact educational practices (HIPs; e.g. research, service-learning, community engagement) into your undergraduate courses, yet worried about the time and effort needed to provide your students with a positive, meaningful experience? If so, then we have a wonderful opportunity for you. Supported by QEP funding, we are inviting faculty for the Spring 2018 semester to use HIP Student Coaches in your course to facilitate implementing one of these practices. HIP student coaches are faculty-recruited undergraduate or graduate students who collaborate with faculty to mentor undergraduate students with course-integrated projects. Student coaches mentor their peers on class-specific projects, rather than functioning as GTAs or GRAs with responsibility for grading or evaluating students. High-impact coaches are student-focused and should not assist in faculty-based research. Student coaches will receive a $300 scholarship, with the expectation of participating in 3 hours of training (early January) and contributing approximately 30 hours to course-integrated project mentoring. Faculty are required to participate in 1 hour of training in December, select their own coaches, and provide deliverable materials at end of semester documenting examples of the student projects that the HIP student coaches facilitated (e.g. poster from SURE or Service-Learning Showcase; digital curation project; writing submission to journal, etc.). The LEAD Scholars Academy invites individuals to share their leadership knowledge and experience with the UCF campus during Leadership Week 2018. The committee is looking for workshops/sessions that will challenge and inspire the campus community and showcase current leadership topics. #WeAreUCF Photo Mosaic to celebrate the 25th Diversity Week – Be part of UCF history!
Post your photos to Instagram and/or Twitter using the hashtag #WeAreUCF to be part of a larger photo mosaic of the entire campus! Anyone, anywhere can post photos and we need 6-8,000, so tell your friends, family, and fellow Knights! On October 16, 9am-4pm and October 17, 9am-6pm, the mosaic will be in the Student Union Atrium and if you post photos during those event hours you will receive a print-out keepsake and be able to place your photo on the mosaic! We will also be distributing posters of the final mosaic after Diversity Week is over. Stay tuned!

Florida Statewide Symposium Keynote Seminar (Friday, October 27, 1:30-2:45pm, Key West Ballroom, Student Union)
UCF faculty are invited to attend the Undergraduate Research Florida Statewide Symposium Keynote Seminar “Leveraging campus-wide initiatives to grow student scholarship” presented by Dr. Bethany M. Usher, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education, George Mason University.
Keynote overview: Undergraduate research, once thought of narrowly as science-based research that produced publications and led to graduate school, is now seen as a model high-impact activity that allows students to apply their academic knowledge to a variety of challenges. Dr. Usher describes how campuses can capitalize on campus-wide initiatives to build or enhance undergraduate research programs to be inclusive of students, disciplines, and outcomes.

We will be offering faculty-facing workshops on the following topics in CB 1 205:
Undergraduate Research and Travel Grants (OUR Grant proposal deadline is 5pm, Friday, October 27th for Spring funding)
Undergraduate Research provides funding to undergraduate researchers to support their work. These grants can be used to fund materials or equipment not available on UCF’s campus and travel costs associated with conducting research. Individual students may apply for grants of up to $500 for research costs. Students traveling to conduct research are eligible for up to $1000 to support cost of travel (i.e. flights, hotel stays). Group projects may be eligible for up to $1000. Please click the hyperlink above for more information.
FACULTY WRITING CLUB FALL 2017
Join a faculty writing club to start your fall off with a focus on productivity and camaraderie. Having trouble getting into a good writing rhythm? Need to get away from your office to get a change of perspective and a little privacy? Forget the coffee shop—join your colleagues on Thursday and Friday mornings from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in FCTL for a loosely structured writing session. We'll take five or six minutes each week to go around the room and state a goal for the time block and then spend the rest of the time working on our individual projects. Bring your own laptop or use an FCTL computer. And of course there will be coffee. Everyone is welcome!
