SPRING PROGRAMMING AT THE FACULTY CENTER
Friday Teaching and Learning Days
The Faculty Center will host Teaching and Learning Days on three Fridays this semester from 9:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. with lunch included for the first 30 registrants. Topics will vary and will include sessions by other faculty support offices at UCF. Look for details in upcoming Sunday listserv announcements; meanwhile, save the following Fridays in your calendar: February 9th, March 9th, and April 13th.
Course Innovation Project: Active Learning Classrooms

Many new classrooms on the main and downtown campuses are currently being designed as active learning spaces: flexible rooms with no “front” that better support active learning pedagogies. The purpose of this Course Innovation Project is to develop and share effective practices for teaching in these future spaces. Participants will have opportunities to experience learning and presenting in active classrooms, learn about the latest in instructional technology, read and discuss selected relevant literature, and discuss ways in which changing spaces impact assessment and instruction. As a deliverable, participants will be expected to design and share individual contributions to a collaboratively-developed faculty-facing guide for teaching in active learning classrooms. To receive the $500 grant, faculty must attend four cohort meetings and submit individual materials for the active learning guide. The cohort will meet on the following Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.: January 24, February 21, March 21 and April 11.

Course Innovation Project: Virtual Reality and Education
This Course Innovation Project will focus on using virtual reality in the classroom. In our four sessions we will address rudimentary technical aspects of this emerging tool, explore a variety of existing VR programs appropriate for use in a wide range of disciplines, experience VR modules created by Embodied Labs (a partner organization), consider questions about the possibilities of using VR for training and assessment, and discuss issues related to ethics and innovation through the VR lens. To receive the $500 grant, participants will be expected to attend the four sessions; put in some outside time experiencing VR programs; and produce a deliverable, which may include a) demonstrated modifications to a course through incorporation of VR or b) relevant faculty-facing materials such as instructions or an article for Faculty Focus. The cohort will meet on the following Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.: January 18, February 15, March 8, and April 12.

Course Innovation Project: Contemplative Practices in the Classroom

In this Course Innovation Project, faculty members will develop a significant series of contemplative practices that are designed to be woven into learning activities throughout the semester. Deliverables will include: 1) development of a series of classroom activities and/or assignments, and 2) a Faculty Focus article for a special edition on contemplative pedagogy or a digital story on your experiences using contemplative practices in the classroom. In addition, there will be an opportunity to participate in research on the impact of your assignments on your students’ learning approaches, which will provide you with data you can use in your professional development. The cohort will be held from 1:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m. on the following Tuesdays: January 16, February 13, March 6, and April 10. Faculty Development Cohort: An Asset-Based Approach to Coping with Secondary Trauma

By popular demand, the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning is expanding its asset-based approach to secondary trauma cohort into Spring 2018! The Faculty Development Community will focus on identifying assets that can be used to cope with secondary trauma that can result from exposure to student trauma. Without proper mapping of resources and tools, it may be difficult for faculty members to know how to assist students and where on campus to find the resources that their students need. In addition, if faculty do not have an awareness of the resources that can assist them in dealing with secondary trauma, they face a high risk of compassion fatigue and burnout, which can result in lowered outcomes for their classroom performance. The community will meet from 9:30–11:30 a.m. on the following Thursdays: January 25, February 22, March 22, and April 19.

Course Innovation Project: Enhancing Active Learning Using Webcourses@UCF

The Faculty Center will collaborate with the Center for Distributed Learning to lead this CIP for faculty members interested in active learning and online environments. In this cohort, faculty will redesign part of an existing course, using tools in Webcourses@UCF to support student learning and improve an online, mixed mode, or web-enhanced face-to-face course. To receive the $500 grant, participants will attend four cohort meetings, produce one of three project deliverables (a new or updated major assignment/project; activities, online and face-to-face, if applicable, for one week’s worth of content; or course revisions, based on a course observation and/or formal review), attend the Spring session of the Faculty Seminars in Online Teaching (March 2018) or watch two Faculty Seminars in Online Teaching, design an assignment or weekly lesson plan to implement during the fall semester, and produce a final report. The cohort will meet on the following Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.: January 24, February 28, March 28, and April 18.

STEM Faculty Learning Community
In collaboration with the Florida Consortium of Metropolitan Research Universities, the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty members teaching large introductory gateway courses in STEM fields to participate in a faculty learning community that will focus on improving STEM education at UCF. Faculty members will meet three times during the semester, agree to have a trained undergraduate student observe their course to collect data, and provide a written reflective report at the end of the project. Open Virtual Reality Hours
This spring, the Faculty Center will offer regularly scheduled hours for you to experience the latest in virtual-reality technology and software. Come see what’s available and have a discussion about how to complement your teaching effectively. If you plan to use VR in any of your classes, this time could serve as an opportunity for you or your students to come in outside of class to use the equipment without taking away from class time. Starting February 2nd, join us on Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (with the exception of February 9th, March 9th, and April 13th).
Special Interest Group: Writing a Journal Article in 12 Weeks
The purpose of this workshop is to enable faculty to produce an article manuscript for submission to an academic journal. It is designed to help participants make time for research and writing in the midst of their other various professional and personal obligations. It can also help participants make and meet weekly goals. Faculty writers will work over twelve weeks during the semester to revise an existing piece of writing (conference paper, chapter, unpublished draft, etc.), to identify publishing venues, and to submit the finished product for publication. Each participant will receive a copy of the Writing Your Journal Article in 12 Weeks book prior to the beginning of the workshop.

QEP Integrative Learning Awards Call for Proposals
The Division of Teaching and Learning and the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) are pleased to announce the Integrative Learning Awards Program. To date, the QEP has funded 50 awards totaling over $330,000.
In its third year, the program invites proposals for projects that address the QEP’s theme, What’s Next: Integrative Learning for Professional and Civic Preparation. There are two award categories:

Spring 2018 QEP-Sponsored Course Designation Workshop
Develop or revamp your course to gain the Integrative-Learning Experience (IE), Research Intensive (RI), or Service-Learning (SL) designation in this five-session workshop.
Meeting Times: Five Friday mornings (Jan 26, Feb 16, Mar 2, Mar 30, and Apr 20) from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Location: UCF Main Campus – Teaching Academy (TA201)
Grant: $250 for completion of workshops and deliverables, plus $250 for achieving the designation
Proposals Due: January 19, 2018
UCF aims to provide students with the best undergraduate education in the state of Florida. To support this goal, the university is introducing two new High-Impact Practice Course Designations to go along with the existing Service-Learning (SL) designation: Integrative-Learning Experience (IE) and Research Intensive (RI). High-Impact experiences give students an opportunity to excel in and out of the classroom. These three designations are available to help faculty promote their high-impact courses and to allow students to quickly identify them during registration. The application process to designate a course is planned to begin in fall 2018. For more information on the three course designations, visit the Division of Teaching and Learning Website.
Faculty interested in developing or revising a course to prepare to apply for the designation in fall 2018 have the opportunity to apply for this five-session workshop. Participants will hear from faculty experts and work hands-on with their peers to create course plans and assignments.
Space is limited. To apply to participate in the workshop series, please send a brief statement (no more than 200 words) describing which of your courses you plan to workshop, in which designation track (IE, RI, or SL) you wish to participate, and whether you are developing a new course or revamping an existing course.

Leadership Series: Extending and Measuring Scholarly Reach and Impact

In this session, Scholarly Communication Librarian Sarah Norris and Digital Initiatives Librarian Lee Dotson will explain how faculty can further publicize, disseminate, and measure the reach of their scholarship through UCF’s Showcase of Text, Archives, Research & Scholarship (STARS). Benefits of using this digital repository of scholarship include enhanced searchability and tracking of impact using alternative metrics. The session will also feature faculty member Barry Mauer, who has created a successful author profile and collection in STARS.

This is an opportunity for you to have a seasoned faculty member review and give constructive feedback on your vita. Bring a hard copy of your CV and drop in any time during the block of time the session is offered. You will be assigned to a seasoned faculty member who will review and give feedback on your CV in 15 minutes. This is open to all ranks/types of faculty (e.g., tenure earning, tenured, non-tenure earning).
Reviewers include Pegasus Professors, previous university and college promotion and tenure committee members and chairs, and other experienced faculty. To the extent possible, we will accommodate requests for meeting with multiple reviewers.

Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence
Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence (SURE) is a poster forum for UCF undergraduates to present their
research and creative projects to the broader university community. This year's event will take place during Student Research Week on April 5th. The deadline to submit an application to present at the Showcase is February 9th, 2018 at 1p.m. Undergraduates (and Fall 2017 graduates) from all disciplines are encouraged to apply.
Florida Undergraduate Research Conference
The Florida Undergraduate Research Conference (FURC) is a poster forum open to all undergraduate researchers to present their research. The deadline to apply is January 19th. This year's event will be at Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne, FL on February 23-24th. Student accepted may apply for a FURC Travel Award through Undergraduate Research (due February 5th).
Enroll Students in Independent Research Credit Hours
Please have students that you are mentoring in research and scholarship enroll in independent research 4912, if they are not involved in structured research programs. Students can enroll in various credit hours, including 0 credit hours (at no cost if they are enrolled in other courses). When students enroll in this course, it shows up on your course load, and their transcript.

FACULTY WRITING CLUB SPRING 2018
Join a faculty writing club to start your spring off with a focus on productivity and camaraderie. Having trouble getting into a good writing rhythm? Need to get away from your office to get a change of perspective and a little privacy? Forget the coffee shop—join your colleagues on Thursday and Friday mornings from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in FCTL for a loosely structured writing session. We'll take five or six minutes each week to go around the room and state a goal for the time block and then spend the rest of the time working on our individual projects. Bring your own laptop or use an FCTL computer. And of course there will be coffee. Everyone is welcome!
